Essential guide: Everything you need to know about the new Tulum Airport (TQO)

Until recently, the only way to get to Tulum was to fly into Cancun and travel almost two hours by road. That's no longer the case! Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum is the new direct gateway to the heart of the Mexican Caribbean. Here's what nobody has told you to make your arrival perfect.
Where is Tulum Airport?
Unlike other airports, this one is located in the jungle, about 25 kilometers south of downtown Tulum (approx. 35-45 minutes by car). Its design is modern, sustainable, and has an organic vibe that makes you feel like you're in paradise from the moment you land.
How to fly directly to Tulum in 2026?

Many travelers still believe they must stop over in Cancun, but connectivity has grown enormously:
- From Mexico: Aeroméxico, Volaris, and Viva Aerobus offer direct flights from Mexico City (AIFA and AICM), Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Tijuana.
- From the US and Canada: United, Delta, American Airlines, JetBlue, and Air Canada have direct routes from cities such as Houston, New York, Atlanta, Miami, and Toronto.
- From Europe: Good news! Discover Airlines (Lufthansa) now connects directly to Frankfurt.
Transportation: How to get to your hotel in Tulum?

As it is a new airport located in the jungle, transportation is a key issue. Here are your options:
- ADO Bus: The most economical option. There are frequent departures to the Tulum Downtown Terminal for approximately $250 - $290 MXN.
- Shared Shuttle: You can book transfers that drop you off at your hotel door for approximately $400-$600 MXN.
- Taxis and Private shuttles: These are comfortable but expensive (they can exceed $1,500 MXN). Tip: Book in advance to avoid “last-minute” rates at the airport.
- Tren Maya: The airport has its own station connected to the Tren Maya, perfect if you plan to travel to Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar, or Playa del Carmen.
Where to stay near Tulum Airport?

If your flight is delayed or departs very early, here are some strategic options:
- In Downtown Tulum (35 min away): Mundo Maya Tulum or Siente Tulum. These are ideal for being close to the ADO bus terminal.
- Luxury/Jungle Area: Aloft Tulum or Wyndham Tulum.
- Felipe Carrillo Puerto: If you are looking for a more authentic and economical experience, this town is about 45 minutes south and offers hotels such as the Hotel Turquesa Maya.
Nearby points of interest (to take advantage of the location)
The airport is closer to certain gems than Cancun itself:
- Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve: A World Heritage Site just a few minutes away. Ideal for mangrove tours.
- Laguna Muyil: Less crowded than typical cenotes, perfect for floating in natural channels.
- Cobá Archaeological Zone: About 50 minutes away, where you can still see the jungle from the top of its pyramids.
- Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote: Classic must-sees for snorkeling.
What else should I know about Tulum?
- Don't be alarmed if you see a lot of vegetation around; the airport was built with respect for jaguar biological corridors.
- The airport is smaller than Cancun's, which means baggage claim is much faster.
- Being in the jungle, the humidity is higher. Please be sure to have your insect repellent handy if you're waiting for transportation outside.
